Houston, IWC Has a Watch: The Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive Is Built for Space

When you’ve already conquered the skies with 90 years of pilot’s watches, where do you go next? Apparently, straight into orbit.

At Watches and Wonders Geneva, IWC Schaffhausen unveiled the Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive, the Swiss watchmaker’s first timepiece engineered and certified from the ground up for human spaceflight. No modified aviation watch. No heritage piece repurposed for the occasion. This is a purpose-built tool for the final frontier, developed in partnership with Vast, the company behind Haven-1: the world’s first commercial space station.

The result is a genuinely groundbreaking watch that rethinks how a timepiece should function when you’re wearing thick EVA gloves, floating in microgravity, and contending with temperature swings from +100°C in direct sunlight to -150°C in shadow.


Crownless Operation: The Vertical Drive System

The headline innovation is a patent-pending rotating bezel system that eliminates the crown entirely. Inspired by astronauts operating inside bulky space suits, every function — winding, setting home time or mission time — is controlled via the bezel and a clever side-mounted rocker switch.

A sophisticated Vertical Drive clutch transmits the bezel’s rotation to the winding stem with impressive mechanical efficiency. You can wind the watch by rotating the bezel anti-clockwise, or simply let the automatic rotor do the work. The system operates equally well on Earth or in zero gravity, a hybrid winding solution that feels like proper forward-thinking engineering rather than novelty.


Dual-Time Display Built for Orbital Reality

The matte black dial is stripped to the absolute essentials, minimising reflections and maximising legibility in extreme light conditions. It displays two time zones simultaneously: the central hands show current local time, while a dedicated 24-hour hand on the outer scale tracks mission reference time (GMT/UTC).

The 24-hour display isn’t arbitrary. In low Earth orbit, the sun rises and sets roughly every 90 minutes — up to 16 “days” in a single Earth day. Astronauts maintain consistent Earth time for work, sleep and operations, and the second time-zone function allows the hour hand to be jumped in one-hour increments. For those of us back on terra firma, it’s equally useful for tracking home time whilst moving between Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

The movement is the new IWC-manufactured Calibre 32722 — an automatic with an integrated GMT module, a 120-hour power reserve, and a date window at 3 o’clock. Hour and minute hand edges are coated in green Super-LumiNova, while the 24-hour hand glows blue, a quiet nod to the thin blue line of Earth’s horizon as seen from space.


Built Like a Spacecraft

Materials here are chosen for extreme performance, not showroom sparkle. The case is crafted from lightweight white zirconium oxide ceramic, second only to diamond on the Vickers hardness scale. The rotating bezel and caseback are fashioned from IWC’s proprietary Ceratanium, a material that combines titanium’s lightness and tensile strength with ceramic-like hardness and scratch resistance. It is, in short, impervious to corrosion, temperature shock, and the brutal vibrations of a rocket launch.

The watch sits on a white integrated FKM rubber strap — the same high-performance fluorinated rubber used in extreme industrial environments, offering excellent thermal insulation and UV resistance. The caseback carries a symbolic engraving evoking a space vehicle: a quiet reminder of humanity’s restless curiosity and IWC’s willingness to push well beyond the atmosphere.


Tested and Certified for Actual Spaceflight

Unlike previous IWC timepieces that flew as passenger items on Inspiration4 and Polaris Dawn, the Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive has undergone rigorous type testing at Vast’s headquarters in Long Beach, California. Engineers subjected it to vibration forces well in excess of a typical rocket ascent — up to 10g with rapid directional changes — as well as pressure cycling and material compatibility assessments for the Haven-1 environment.

It passed with flying colours. The watch has received official spaceflight qualification from Vast for the inaugural Haven-1 mission, which will carry four crew members on a short-duration journey encompassing science, research, and in-space manufacturing.

This is not a watch that has been to space in a bag. It is certified to be worn there.
