This is the Fastest Open-Top Aston Martin Ever Made

by Nick Walton

Aston Martin’s new, rakishly good looking Valhalla Spider is an open-cockpit version of its mid-engined plug-in hybrid supercar and is enough to make you break out in a cold sweat.

Say what you will (or have) about hybrid cars, they just seem to get better every day. The Valhalla Spider by British marque Aston Martin is proof in point: it’s the brand’s first mid-engined production Aston without a fixed roof, and the fastest open-top car it’s built in its storied history.

For Those Miami Vice Moments

The new addition is the open-top version of the Valhalla, Aston’s 1,000 horsepower hybrid supercar. It’s also the first time the brand has taken the roof off a car with its engine in the middle. In plain terms, the V8 sits right behind your shoulders, and now there’s nothing between you and the sky.

That changes the experience completely. In the coupé, the engine’s roar reaches you through carbon fibre and glass. In the Spider you’ll hear every breath of it. The air intake above the engine has been made taller and now rises behind the cockpit like a dorsal fin. Cruise through town in electric mode and the car barely whispers. Find an open road, put your foot down, and it stops whispering and starts barking louder than your wife when your eyes linger too long on her sister.

Built to Be Looked At

The design does most of the talking. The Spider keeps the coupé’s low, sculpted shape, with smooth surfaces flowing back over the rear wheels. With the roof off, that shape gets a lot more dramatic. The doors still swing up and forwards, and they’re now frameless, so arriving anywhere becomes a small piece of theatre. Pulling up at The Peninsula will be quite something.

Inside, a new carbon-fibre touring seat comes as standard. Our take: that’s a tell. Aston expects owners to drive these cars over long distances, not just tick off laps at a track day.

The roof is simple. A fabric top comes as standard, and you take it off and stow it yourself. A small wind deflector clips in when the roof is off (because no one likes arriving looking disheveled) and tucks into storage pockets in the sills when it’s not. However, there’s a cavet: the fabric top limits the car to 200km/h so you might want to splurge a little more and go with the optional carbon hard top, which lets the Spider reach its full 350km/hr potential.

What It Means for Asia

For readers in Hong Kong and Singapore, the Spider makes most sense after dark. Picture the curves of Shek O Road at night, or the long climb to Genting before the weekend traffic. The midday heat and the afternoon downpours are another matter, which is one more reason to order that hard top.

The Valhalla coupé is limited to 999 cars worldwide, and the Spider is expected to be rarer still, with deliveries expected to begin in the third quarter of 2027.
