We all have that perfect holiday mapped out in our heads. For some it’s about carving powder in Niseko. For others it’s about getting as far from the beaten path as kidnap insurance allows. And for some, there’s the escape where you wake up metres from the ocean, walk next door for a beach club day session, and still be back in your own private tent by nightfall.
Twinpalms Tented Camp Phuket, planted just steps from Bangtao Beach, is built entirely around that fantasy, and having spent a couple of nights inside one of its canvas-roofed suites, I can confirm it delivers the rare combination of proper romance and proper nightlife, without either one cancelling the other out.
This is glamping done properly, with eco-friendly tented suites that wouldn’t look out of place on the Okavango Delta, set among swaying palms and acacia trees, with an adults-only policy that keeps things civilised. It’s all the work of Twinpalms, the group already running several of Phuket’s best resorts, restaurants and beach clubs.
The whole setup is built for a very specific kind of guest: couples who want a private hideaway to retreat to after a day spent on the sand and a night spent at the bar next door (and if the safari-tent idea appeals but you’d rather your view came with a few extra metres of elevation, Twinpalms is about to open some rather savvy treehouses).
Location: On Phuket’s Best Party Beach
Phuket’s traffic is no joke, so where you base yourself matters more than you’d think — unless you plan to become BFFs with your Grab driver. Bangtao, on the island’s southwest coast, is one of Phuket’s best beaches and increasingly its liveliest, with white sand, safe swimming, and a strip of beach clubs, bars and restaurants that keeps the energy going well past sunset.
Twinpalm’s Tented Camp sits a minute’s walk from the sand, right beside the beach’s biggest draws, and about 20 kilometres from the airport, with Surin Beach an easy trip that skips the cross-island traffic entirely. Shops, bars, pharmacies and boutiques are all walkable, and the adults-only setup, paired with direct beach club access, makes this an obvious pick for a couple’s weekend built around a childless, carefree existence rather than a family trip.
The Suites: Safari Meets the South China Sea
Reception sits inside an elegant main tent with a safari-esque bar (perfect for those moments spent channelling your inner Hemingway) overlooking a man-made lake, around which most of the camp’s 28 tented suites are clustered. Each cavas-covered respite leans into that indoor-outdoor feel, with neutral tones, antique-style wooden furniture, rattan and leather giving the interiors a sophisticated edge rather than the novelty-tent feel you might expect.
Every suite features air-conditioning, a king-size bed, an outdoor patio with a swing seat (ideal for the morning coffee or for nursing damage sustained the night before), a minibar, and a private bathroom with a walk-in shower and double vanity. Categories run from entry-level Lagoon Tents up through Lagoon Pool Tents, and Beach Tents right on the sand, Beach Pool Tents — the honeymooners’ favourite — and Lagoon Pool Tented Suites with their own plunge pools in manicured gardens.
If you’re bringing along another couple for a proper weekend away (and we’re not here to judge), the two-bedroom Lagoon Pool Tented Suite comes with a shared living area and a heat-quenching pool.
My own 50-square-metre Lagoon Tent, overlooking a lagoon stocked with koi and the odd curious catfish, feels like a genuine dose of escapism — a quiet, private counterpoint to whatever is happening down at the beach club a few minutes’ walk away.
Beach, Bars and Club Nights
The Tented Camp skips its own restaurant, but that’s because you’re only steps from two of Bangtao’s best-known venues, both under the same ownership, and both built for exactly the kind of day-into-night session this beach is known for.
Catch Beach Club shape-shifts through the day with breakfast a relaxed affair with an à la carte menu built on local ingredients, before the beach club energy ramps up around midday, with the island’s beautiful assembling around the infinity-edge pool, perching on the oversized daybeds and seeking shelter from the tropical sun in the plush cabanas. Visit on the right afternoon, and you’ll be greeted by a visiting DJ working the decks like he’s unwinding his father’s disappointment.
By night, Catch turns into one of the island’s better dining rooms before relenting entirely to its baser, dancefloor urges, with regular club nights, celebrity DJ sets and the occasional fire dancer keep the energy running into the wee hours. Fortunately, it’s an autopilot stumble home to your tent afterwards.
For something with a slower pulse (like you the next morning), The Lazy Coconut next door serves soul-healing Mediterranean-leaning tapas and grilled seafood right on the sand, with a rustic-chic bar pouring whole fresh-fruit cocktails well past sunset. If you’re looking for a hair-of-the-proverbial-dog suggestion, the Aloha cleans slates and cures short term memory loss with a mix of Havana Club rum, orange curaçao, orgeat and lime. And yes, it’s served in a whole pineapple, the way most drinks should be.
When you’re ready to miggle once ahgain, the front desk will book you into Wagyu Steakhouse at nearby Twinpalms Surin Beach Phuket (they’ll even drive you for free), considered the island’s best steakhouse. Here, classic cocktails are mixed with timeless precision at the stand-alone bar, and the Josper oven and Beech grill are alters to dry-aged cuts from the US, Spain and Australia’s Darling Downs region.
Back at camp, the nightly fire pit happy hour — imagine a cocktail in hand while someone plays a traditional khim — is the perfect low-key nightcap for the evenings of self reflection that invariably follow nights of deplorable decadence.
Wellness and Extras
Also perfect for your mental and physical recovery, there’s a stone-lined ice pool, a small sauna and a traditional hot tub a few steps from the main pool, along with a compact air-conditioned gym (because we never skip leg day tiger).
The property doesn’t run its own spa, but therapists come directly to your suite and the massage I had, table and all delivered to the tent, was one of the better recovery sessions I’ve had anywhere,. Besides, there’s nothing better than rolling straight from the massage table into bed after a big night on Bangtao, just tell the therapist to ease on the coconut oil.
The front desk can also sort snorkelling trips, island hopping excursions (try forging your own path on one of the property’s e-scooters), scuba diving, kayaking and parasailing. You’ll also get full access to the wellness facilities at nearby Twinpalms Surin Beach, a short shuttle ride away.
The Verdict
Twinpalms Tented Camp Phuket is a romantic escape that still keeps you within stumbling distance of one of Phuket’s best beach club scenes — a rare combination worth booking around. Expect to pay from around US$250–400 a night in low season (May–October) and US$400–700 in high season (December–February), with the shoulder months offering the best balance of price and weather. Rates typically cover breakfast at Catch, Wi-Fi and shared facilities, with spa treatments and activities charged on top.
The property sits toward the upper end of Bangtao’s accommodation scene — pricier than a standard beach hotel, but considerably more accessible than the island’s private-pool villa resorts — and two or three nights is about the right dose. Just know you’re staying on one of the island’s livelier stretches of beach, so the odd fireworks blast or bassline from Catch might find its way past the canvas walls.
If that’s part of the appeal rather than a dealbreaker, this is one of the best weekend escapes on the island for a couple who want their beach days and bar nights within arm’s reach of a proper private retreat.
