Six months old and already unmissable, Equipoise Resort pairs bamboo-built villas and rice terrace views with a spa ritual serious enough to justify the flight to Ubud.
If your idea of a break still means a sunbed in Seminyak, it’s time to update the itinerary. The smart money — and the smart new resorts — have moved north, into the rice terraces and jungle folds of Ubud, where Gianyar’s Equipoise Resort has quietly become the city escape every overworked man should have on his list.
This isn’t a beach club with a wellness menu bolted on. Equipoise, from iNi Vie Hospitality, is a luxury eco-resort built almost entirely from bamboo and hidden away deep within in working rice paddies rather than on the resort strips of the south coast. For lads who spend most of the year answering emails at 11 pm, it’s the kind of total reset that a long weekend rarely delivers, and after my own two-night escape there, I understand why it’s already one of the most talked-about openings on the island.
An Arrival That Resets the Nervous System
We land in Ubud on a village ceremony day, and the drive in through lanes lined with villagers in white ceremonial dress, offering baskets balanced overhead, does more to slow your pulse than any airport lounge ever could. By the time the resort’s sleek Chinese EV delivers us to the resort’s sun-kissed bamboo-vaulted lobby, the transition from city stress to jungle calm is already well underway.
That bamboo isn’t just for show; it’s the bones of the resort, used confidently, and everywhere, including in Aura, the resort’s chic little cocktail bar, which turns out to have one hell of a good spirits selection if you’re like me and fancy a pre-dinner patience-creator. Beyond Aura, a mesmerising four-tiered pool, watched over by a rather imposing statue of the Hindu goddess Saraswati, looks out over rice terraces and ranks of slender coconut palms swaying in the afternoon breeze.
As relaxing and unhurried as the rest of the stay proves to be, check-in includes a scented-oil ritual and a ceremonial foot wash in copper bowls of frangipani water, a zesty welcome cocktail in hand. It’s just what the right kind of doctors would order for the spreadsheet-weary man who’s spent the last few hours running on airport coffee.
Total Seclusion, Rice Terraces on Every Side
Equipoise sits in a blissfully rural stretch of Gianyar, which makes it feel like a portal that whisks new arrivals back to a time before Bali discovered house music and digital nomas. That means real quiet; there’s no traffic, no distant DJ sets, and no construction, just birdsong, distant temple bells and water moving through the subak irrigation channels that thread the property. If your lady love wants to spend her time in browsing the boutiques of Ubud, this isn’t the place for you. It is, however, exactly the setting a proper mental escape from the urban coal face demands: cinematic, remote and about as far from a beach-club Bali as it gets.
Bamboo Palaces
The holistic hideaway is made up of just 19 villas, split between those framing the paddies (which I’d suggest you book) and those set deeper into the grounds. There’s also a larger two-bedroom Presidential Villa for couples that like to escape with their closest confidents. Every villa shares the same bamboo construction, including an open living space downstairs with a kitchenette and rose-gold bar table, a lounge with a couch and a pair of seductive sun loungers facing a private plunge pool, and a bathroom with an outdoor jacuzzi.
A spiral staircase leads to the upper level, home to a circular bed so large a man would need to be a sprinter to catch his femme fatale in it, and lit by a design-savvy oculus set into a vaulted ceiling. There’s a small balcony beyond French windows, and an impressive projector screen that decends from above for those perfect Netflix ‘n’ chill evenings.
It’s a genuinely fantastical piece of design, with the bamboo glowing amber in the late afternoon light, the inviting plunge pool only steps away, and the glorious outdoor shower an experiential prescription for mental resets.
The Spa: Reason Enough to Book the Flight
If one thing justifies the drive up to Ubud specifically for Equipoise, it’s the spa, one of the standout wellness experiences on the island right now, and worth building an entire escape around, even if you don’t consider yourself a ‘spa guy’. The standalone spa pavilion overlooks yet more rice terraces and feels a world away from the modern world, with welcoming therapists, spacious treatment rooms, and – perhaps for those who don’t care for massages – a private onsen-like hydrotherapy suite of hot and cold plunge pools. Download that podcast and prepare for pure bliss.
The signature is a rice paddy treatment combines tradition and tech and opens with an iPad survey for calculating your Urip, or life energy score, based on the traditional Balinese Wariga calendar. Therapists with that lighter-than-air vibe that only the Balinese seem to possess then blend a fully bespoke oil from 18 essences, including frangipani, sandalwood, champaka, cajeput.
This curated blend is then used for your milk foot bath, steam session, traditional hammam, hour-long Balinese massage and, in a final flourish that’s gauranteed to melt you into submission, a flower bath overlooking the rice stems. The whole ritual runs close to three hours, and by the end we’re walk back to our villas seemingly as weightless as our therapists. For busy men who treat recovery as seriously as output, this is the benchmark.
Romance and Ritual: Built for Two
Beyond the spa, Equipoise leans hard into romantic escape territory. A private candlelit rooftop dinner is worth booking on its own, a guitarist sets the mood over dinner at the resort’s lofty Terra Verte restaurant (although carnivores might like opt for the new Riserva steakhouse downstairs), scrolls of Balinese folk stories are left on the pillows at turndown, and dwell for more than a few minutes by the main pool and a cheerful staff member will arrive bearing gifts like local mango sorbet and sunscreen top-ups.
Once you’re one with the universe once again, there’s also plenty to keep you occupied. The resort offers a comprehensive range of cultural activities, including silversmithing (a nice way to make her a gift she’ll remember), batik printing, pottery, guided rice-paddy walks and a hike down to nearby waterfall. The activities are all run by local Balinese staff who genuinely love sharing their 2,000 year old traditions with new arrivals.
My wife and I joined silversmith Nick one our second day, crafting a pair of silver rings (naturally, they both became hers by default) during a fun post-breakfast session.
Soul on the Plate
Cocktails at Aura, courtesy of bartender Mang Agus, are certainly worth the detour on the way to dinner — the lad may prefer the local arak over a London Dry but he makes a stellar dirty martini, using Bali’s own East Indies Gin.
Dinner at Terra Verte, an airy space beneath soaring bamboo eaves, delivers a standout confit duck ragù lasagne and a tuna tartare worth returning for (if you like your beef, I’d suggest skipping the disappointing Wagyu steaks and instead opt for the short rib pizza).
Breakfast on the restaurant’s terrace, rice terraces in full view, is another highlights of the stay, with dishes fusing Mediterranean and Indonesian flavours, paired with fresh juice blends (try the local jamu for an immune boost) and all the crossiants you could ask for.
The Small Kinks of a Six-Month-Old Resort
Equipoise is honest about being new, and it shows in a few operational wrinkles rather than in the hospitality itself. The team is still adjusting to things like the WhatsApp-only guest communication and the villa’s electro-magnetic doors and the villa tech, although well-intentioned (there are no less than six remotes in each bedroom), needs a little refining. However, none of this derails the stay, and every interaction with the resort team comes with the genuine warmth that has made Bali a world-class destination.
The Verdict
For the busy urban gent who needs more than a long weekend to actually switch off, Equipoise delivers a seriously seductive Bali escape, from its Avatar-esque bamboo architecture, to its verdant rice terrace views and that spa ritual, worth the flight all by itself. Sure, the experience isn’t as spit polished as you might find at one of the chain resorts, but six months into its life, Equipoise is already one of the more compelling design-forward retreats in Ubud (which is saying something), and a strong pick for a luxury wellness break or a romantic escape with someone worth impressing.
Simply book that flight, pack the sunscreen, and prepare to surrender entirely.
