If you’re looking for date night inspiration, Maggie Choo’s fifth-season cabaret, a Baroque-inspired production of hand-stitched costumes and 12 new numbers, opens this week in Central Hong Kong.
Five seasons. That’s nothing if not impressive. Hong Kong’s nightlife scene has a history of cabaret nights that don’t survive a second costume change, let alone a fifth full reinvention. However, stylish speakeasy Maggie Choo’s has now done it every year running.
A Wyndham Street Extravaganza
The perfect setting for a show-stopping date night destination, this latest edition leans into its French Baroque theme, not with restraint but with lavish excess, with 12 numbers across three acts devised to swing the room’s mood from cheerful to seductive to something more decadent, act by act.
The production is anchored by all-new, hand-stitched costumes and by a new house vocalist freshly in the Big Apple, alongside the venue’s existing lead.
Highlights include the opener Bonjour Maggie, an original track from Maggie Choo’s in-house production team that kicks off with a high-tempo DJ set; The Decorative, an interactive number that pulls audience members into the performance as living ornaments; and the title routine Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps, built around a coral-pink, hand-stitched giant headpiece. You may be more into chorus girls than chorus lines, but if there’s a more seductive night on the town in the Fragant Harbour, we’re yet to find it.
New Thursday Voices
Alongside the production, Maggie Choo’s is introducing a rotating Thursday residency pairing two contrasting vocalists. Cecillia Tang Morgana (above), the venue’s existing house vocalist and an elite vocal coach in her own right, brings sultry jazz, R&B and contemporary pop across her sets. Opposite her is catwalk model and singer, Messy Masha — born in Russia, raised between Hong Kong and New York — who moves between dark cabaret, grunge and alternative pop-rock. The two won’t perform the same night twice running, so which voice a guest gets depends on the week.
For anyone treating Maggie Choo’s as a fixture rather than a one-off — a go-to for date nights, out-of-town guests or a proper midweek reset — the venue’s rhythm stays intact around the new show, with live band sets Friday through Wednesday from 8 pm to midnight, resident and guest DJs from midnight, and now this new Thursday centrepiece.
Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps runs every Thursday from 9:30 pm to midnight, with a HK$200 door charge covering one drink, alcoholic or otherwise.
